How to Replace Car Electric Power Door Locks

Power door locks are also known as electric door locks or central locking.Central Locking system allows the driver or front passenger to simultaneously lock or unlock all the doors of an automobile or truck, by pressing a button or flipping a switch.The Switch is normally located on driver side door panel.

Other thing is Remote Locking System.The remote locking system confirms successful locking and unlocking through either a light or a horn signal, and usually offers an option to switch easily between these two variants.This also has the function for windows to be opened or closed by pressing and holding a button on the remote control key fob.

This Will Help You To Repair Power Door Lock.

Part 1: Power Door Lock And Its Related Parts

• The electric door locks inside of car doors consist of a control switch, the locking door latch and/or an electric control solenoid. 
• When the control switch is energized an electrical impulse forces the control solenoid to push or pull the locking mechanism depending on the command selected. (Lock and unlock). 
• Anytime you have problems with an electric door lock check the fuses or thermo fuse the powers the system.

Most power door locks are actuated by a battery controlled key fob,if the key fob isn't working then it's most likely the battery inside the key fob is faulty.Try replacing the battery and see if that helps.

But if replacing the battery is not helping then Keyfob has to be replaced.

To confirm whether keyfob is working or not working.It can be checked at dealer service center.

They will be able to hook up to the computer that controls your keyless entry and make sure the key fob is still programmed or if it's just not sending a signal and needs replaced.

Most Common Possible Faults On Such Case is most of the problems appeared in the wiring in the hinge area of the door or the door lock solenoid just fails.

It can be faulty fuse or short in wiring.But how to confirm if wiring is short or blow fuse.

Most car door lock systems work with one fuse circuit. If the fuse is blown then try putting a new one in and see which door locks will work. If the fuse blows right away then you have a continuous short in the wiring somewhere.
If the fuse doesn't blow until you use a certain door lock switch then you can isolate it to that switch. If it blows every time you hit the switch you will need to unplug each door lock solenoid one at a time to isolate it further.

Part 2: Door Panel Components

Now a days on most vehicle door there are basic controls for the different functions and features.

• Interior light and safety reflector helps illuminate the interior of the vehicle. When the door is open the light and the reflector alert people from a distance your door is open. 
• The electric window switch controls the electrical power to the window motor. The motor turns a series of gears and/or cables to power the window up and down. 
• The electric door switch controls electrical power to the lock solenoid actuator controlling the door to be locked or unlocked. 

Part 3: Working Of Manually Operated Door Lock Switch

How Exactly The Manual Door Lock Switch Works.

A manual door lock switch allows you to manually control the door lock setting. 

• Most manual door locks have an indicator letting you know if the door is locked or unlocked with a red panel when unlocked. 
• The door handle controls to door latch which holds to door shut. 
• Most door latches have two stages, the first stage the door will latch but not be fully closed and the next stage the door is fully closed.

Part 4: Door Panel Removal And Its Components

If the Door Lock switch is not functioning right then door panel has to be removed and internal wiring and its connections are to be checked.

Removing Door Access Panel.

Remove Inner Door Handle Bezel.

First remove all plastic access panels and screw hole covers.

Remove Control Switch Panel.

Clip removal tool to push the clip out and remove the handle.

Pry gently to remove the switch panel, (do not break). Removing the switch panel is different in all cars. Some vehicles don't have a switch panel because it is built into the door panel.

After the switch panel is removed, release the connector safety and disconnect the electrical connector.Now Disconnect Electrical Connector.

Locate and remove all door panel mounting bolts and/or screws. Some door panels use a plastic push style fasteners. After all door panel fasteners have been removed gently pull up and/or out on the panel and remove it. 

Remove all electrical connectors to fully separate the panel from the door.

Most car doors have a weather and sound insulator. Remove door lock manual control rod from inside door panel.

There are three connecting rods that must be removed from the door lock assembly, the manual lock control rod, the door handle control rod and the exterior door lock assembly (outside the door).

Remove the mounting bolt from the door latch/lock assembly.

Now Replace Door Latch/Lock Assembly.

After the door latch/lock mount bolts have been removed, release all electrical connectors and remove the control rods and insert onto new latch/lock assembly. Transfer control rods one at a time to avoid confusion. Most electrical connectors have a notch and only connect one way. After transfer of the control rods and electrical connectors reassemble door latch assembly. Note: before installing the door panel, test the latch and lock operation to insure proper installation.

Part 5: No Power To Door Lock Switch:

On Power Door Locks If There Is No Power To The Door Lock switch Then, 

If the door lock seems to be without any power assist then try this: hold the door lock switch in the up or down position and slowly open and close the door several times to see if the lock tries to work. 

If the lock works then broken wire or partially pinched broken in the hinge area. This is where the wiring loom is connected between the door and the body through a loom that is usually covered by plastic tubing. You will need to pull out the wiring and check for breaks or cracks.

- If that doesn't work then you will need to get to the switch and door lock solenoid.
