Mazda Ticking Noise Left Bank Cylinder Head Makes Ticking Noise Bank 1 is the side with #1 cylinder, Bank 2 is the side with #4 cylinder so.. bank 2 is closet to front of car or left side engine. only a sensor that detects position of each cam and has no mechanical workings. sensor only to signal computer. now.. if? sensor is bad, it is possible for computer to get wrong signal thus altering the timing on that side and possible ticking when this happens. here is the TSB for the problem. You need to remove valve cover , then remove the cam caps and reinstall them.
